Giving Thanks

A couple of friends in blogland have been focusing on what Thanksgiving REALLY means - you know, giving thanks for the blessings in our lives.

It's so easy to focus solely on the meal, especially when you're the one preparing it.  It's easy to get caught up in the preparations, the parades, and especially the sales.  And even more especially the eating part.  If you're me, that is.

At the holidays, namely Thanksgiving and Christmas, it's all too easy to lose sight of the origins of the celebration.  In this case, the meaning is right there in the name of the holiday.  Thanks giving.

So why do people refer to it as Turkey Day? I mean, I know it's just a nickname.  But doesn't it go to show in a way how far so many of us have moved away from the true meaning of the day that we use the centerpiece of the meal to describe it? (Should we call it Tofurkey Day for vegetarians?)

So what are you thankful for? I'm thankful for having a job in this rough economy, and a warm, comfortable home to return to at the end of a long day.  I'm thankful that I even have a meal to deliberate over, to plan, to fantasize about the greatness of (as long as we're being honest).  I'm thankful to have a family to serve it to.  I'm thankful for the love of a good husband.  I'm thankful that everyone I love is healthy - at least, healthy enough, up and moving around, and able to take care of themselves...and if they ARE sick in some way, they have the ability to get it taken care of, unlike so many others who can't even go to see a doctor because they can't pay.

I'm thankful to have been born when and where I was, and to whom I was.

I'm thankful for my life.

So again...what are YOU thankful for?

I should do this too so we can both opt out of doing it at the table out of sheer ridiculousness.
I'm thankful for the sister song. Yeah, I went there.

Hi Jen :-)
I am one of the ones doing the month long "I'm Thankful for: " postings.

Right now, I am thankful you have returned to blogging ;-D

I totally agree with your comments about Thanksgiving now often being referred to as 'Turkey Day' instead of Thanksgiving. I also feel the exact same way about Christmas.

For Thanksgiving, it is not at all that I don't enjoy the meal. Goodness no! My taste-buds have already started their longing for it! And at Christmas I am not against the giving of gifts, etc.. In-fact, I am one of the ones against my family doing away with that tradition last year!!! But that does not mean I don't want or see Christ as the center of it either.

I am with 'Sports Nut Blog' with not enjoying the 'going around the table stating things' tradition. I get very annoyed with how patronizing some of the comments get. It's like they are doing the "this is what I'm suppose to say" script. Gag. Then again, one very spoiled / doted upon teen age niece didn't follow the "script" at all one year, and simply stated she was thankful for her beautiful hair, while stroking it oh so sassily. What finished killing me was how grandma and her mom oohed and awed her. (insert rolling eyes here). If people can't come with stuff on their own, AND have it be from the heart real thankfulness, then skip the tradition! Whoops, best step down off of that soap box o;-p

I hope Thursday goes off very smoothly for you Jen. And I hope your Thankfulness list grows that day!

I hate it when people call Thanksgiving "turkey day" and it's a shame that we only really think about our blessings during this time of the year.

I'm thankful for my patient, supportive and understanding husband and son, my sister, my blog, TiVo and diet Coke. In that order. :)

I'm writing for you. I'm speaking to you.

So I would like to hear from you in return. Did that story make you laugh, or think? Does that recipe look good? Do you relate to me or totally disagree?

Let me hear what YOU think!
